The boundaries of control systems are very wide. Control
systems are differentiated from those of management,
in particular, by the variety of the fields they cover
in the industrial sector:
- air, railway, and road transport control systems
- supervision systems for industrial processes,
electrical supply networks, telecom
- equipment simulation systems, both civil and
military
- monitoring and offensive military armament
systems
- image processing systems such as numerical
video, medical imagery
- embedded systems: cars, military...
This list is far from exhaustive. Control systems are also characterized by the level
of their environment. They are mostly in close contact
with the hardware, and this must be taken into account
on the architectural level. Certain standards, protocols
and constraints have to be respected.
When they are embedded in these materials, additional
development and tooling constraints come into play:
the development platform and proting to a target platform.
Finally, many of these systems are characterized by
their criticality:
- availability: management of breakdowns and degraded
modes, redundancy, failovers...
- response time: memory management, CPU...
- security: risk to the lives of humans, preservation
of the system's hardware environment.
These requirements often imply strong requirements
in test and simulation. The whole of these characteristics specific to the
technical systems implies throughout process of development
an increased quality of the deliverable ones.
